St. Hilary is situated within the Bodmin Moor AONB
It's Cornwall in the raw: largely undeveloped and rich in relics of industrial archaeology, ancient standing stones, forests, wildlife and miles of lonely track...& the closest you'll get to a traffic jam on the moor is being stuck behind a flock of sheep
Bodmin Moor's Area of Outstanding Beauty has over 200 square kilometres of remote & wild landscape, shrouded in mist and mystery and holds a host of designations including World Heritage Site status, recognising the area’s mining industry dating back over 4,000 years. It is also the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Cornwall, most of the moor has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Importance and in 2017 it was awarded Dark Skies status.
From St. Hilary, there is easy access onto the moor with all its excellent opportunities for hiking, dog walking and other outdoor activities and to the beauty spots of The Cheesewring up on Stowe's Hill (a curious rock formation like a giant stack of granite plates ); Minions ( the highest Village in Cornwall: 300m above sea level with a Heritage Museum, admission free, housed in the former engine house of the South Phoenix copper mine ) and The Hurlers ( unique Bronze Age stone circles from around 1500 BC - It is said that some local men were playing a Cornish game known as hurling on the Sabbath and were turned into stone as a punishment.)

Our Adventures up on The Moor
The views are spectacular with ancient buildings, standing stones and medieval farms adding to the feeling of a land full of ancient history. Nature is the main attraction: dizzying views from craggy summits; skylarks shooting out of rolling heaths of bracken, heather and vivid yellow gorse.
And not forgetting the Poldark Connection:
Cornwall has inspired great pieces of literature and played a starring role in more than films and TV Dramas.
Adapted from Winston Graham's novels, the cast and crew of the BBC drama Poldark found themselves on Bodmin Moor for a large part of their time in Cornwall. Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s cottage, Nampara, were shot here along with many capturing the cast on horseback. With a rugged character and wild streak, Bodmin Moor provides the perfect backdrop to Poldark’s plot of passion and family dramatics
